FAQ

Getting Started

  • I see two options to create a book. Should I create my book online or mail my finished materials to you?

The online book creation tool allows you to use your own images and PDFs. There is no per page word limit and it allows for faster printing and delivery. The benefit of the mail-in option is that it captures and preserves your child's drawings and handwriting.

  • Are my order form and tracking code important?

Your order form includes a unique tracking code required to redeem your free book. Without it, you cannot claim the free book included with your kit.

  • Is there anything I need to purchase before starting my book?

Your kit has everything you need to create a book. There are a few extra items you may want to include such as a picture of the author for the “About the Author” book feature.

  • What happened to Creations By You and Easy Student Publishing?

In January 2014, Lulu entered an exclusive licensing agreement with Easy Student Publishing (Creations By You). No future products will be made under the names Easy Student Publishing or Creations By You. More detailed information can be found here.

  • I noticed there are multiple versions of IlluStory and IlluStory A+. What are the differences?

All versions of IlluStory produced through 2012 are branded as Creations By You. In 2013 several improvements to the printed book were introduced with IlluStory A+ including a higher quality book cover and the ability for your child’s illustration to cover the entire area of the book’s front cover. Kits shipped since 2014 are produced by Lulu Jr. and include an improved order form and faster processing.

  • My kit has an expiration date. Can I still use it?

Illustory and My Comic Book kits produced before 2013 do not have an expiration date and can still be redeemed. This includes those Illustory and My Comic Book kits sold under Creations by You. Please note that some features listed on the order form of these older kits are no longer supported by Lulu Jr. Options such as colored book covers, colored trims, book jackets, multiple dedications, and advanced author's option are no longer available. However, the archive option and including an author's photo option are now free of charge.

IlluStory A+ kits produced in 2013 have an expiration date of 12/31/2015.

Illustory, My Comic Book, and My Awesome Book kits produced in 2014 have an expiration date of 03/31/2016

The order form included in your kit includes the expiration date for redeeming the free printed book included in the price of the kit. If you have a kit with an expired date, you may still use it to create your book. Contact our customer service team for more information about expired kits: customerservice@lulujr.com.

  • Do you support other Creations By You products? I am not seeing my product listed on your website. Can I still use it?

If you do not see a Creations By You kit listed on our website, chances are that it is no longer supported. Unsupported products include PlateWorks, My Mug, My Masterpiece, Sesame and Me, My Calendar, Kid Clock, PhotoStory and PhotoStory Jr. If you have any questions regarding an unsupported kit please contact us at: customerservice@lulujr.com. We will do our best to accommodate you.

  • What is the difference between IlluStory and My Awesome Book?

My Awesome Book allows children to create an 8 ½ x 11 hardcover book and includes a “Quick Start Guide” written by NY Times best-selling children’s author, Peter H. Reynolds.

  • What is the difference between Lulu and Lulu Jr.?

Since introducing self-publishing in 2002, Lulu.com has empowered creators in more than 225 countries and territories to produce nearly two million publications. Lulu offers you the expertise, independence and flexibility to create, do, buy and share what you love with the world. Lulu Jr. allows children to become published authors, encouraging creativity, strengthening literacy and building self-esteem.

  • I am creating a children’s book. Can I publish and sell it on Lulu Jr.?

Currently Lulu Jr. is not set up to sell books. If you would like to sell your children’s book, we recommend visiting our parent site, Lulu.com.

Online Book Creation

  • Can I upload images?

You may upload images in JPEG format (.jpg). If your images are in another format, there are several online tools you can use to convert your images to this format. We recommend setting your image resolution to at least 150 DPI jpg with images sized to about 1000 x 1000 pixels. If you are not sure what that means, make sure the picture is large enough to look good on the page, but not so large that the picture takes a long time to upload.

  • Can I upload pages in PDF format?

Yes, you can upload PDF pages. To upload PDFs, select a page and click the Background button. Click Upload PDF below the background library to select your PDF file. When uploaded, the picture will become the background element on that page.

We recommend :uploading Adobe PDF files because they work best with the book making tool.

  • At what quality should I export my PDF for printing?

Our goal is to help you make your child’s work look fantastic when it is professionally printed. Because every computer set-up and software configuration is different, please review the following guidelines:

    File formats
PDF files are an electronic “snapshot” of a file. The text and graphics cannot be changed in this type of file once it is uploaded into your book.

    Resolution
This determines the quality of a digital image. It is identified by DPI (dots per inch) or PPI (pixels per inch).
    • 300 DPI: Best quality for printing
    • 150-200 DPI: Medium quality for printing
    • 72 DPI: Looks great onscreen, but may be fuzzy when printed

    Scanner Settings
Most scanner settings can be adjusted to suit your needs. Refer to the scanner owner’s manual or online help for directions on adjusting settings. We recommend scanning at 300 DPI to ensure the best printing quality for your child’s book.

    Saving a PDF
If you are converting a Microsoft Word document to PDF, select the Standard setting to create a PDF suitable for printing. You may also be able to adjust the resolution when saving the file. Another option for creating a PDF file is to select Print to PDF under the File > Print menu.

    File size
If your file is the correct resolution for printing, it should be between 1 and 5 megabytes in size.
    • Less than 1MB: Too small
    • Greater than 6MB: Too large
    • 1MB-5MB: Just right

  • My PDF will not upload. What should I do?

Some versions of PDFs do not contain headers, which are required for uploading in our tool. If you do not have a copy of Adobe Acrobat, we recommend downloading and installing a free PDF printer such as BullZip. Once installed, open your PDF and select Print. Choose Bullzip as your printer and Print to PDF. This will save the PDF file with the required headers.

  • Can I use pictures I found on the Internet in my book?

You, as the author, are responsible for the content you put in your book, not Lulu Jr. There are large fines associated with using copyrighted material. Please respect the properties of others and do not use copyrighted content in your book.

  • How do I add and remove pages from my book with the online tool?

You can add and remove pages from your book’s Index page. Click Add Page to add a page to the end of your book. If you want to remove a page, select the page and click Remove Page.
IMPORTANT: Once a page has been removed, it cannot be recovered.

Bookmaking Kit Instructions

  • Can I use art materials other than the markers provided?

Yes, you may use any markers and/or colored pencils you choose; however, we request you not use crayons, glue, or glitter since these materials cannot be accurately reproduced in our printing process.
Tip: When using markers or color pencils, use bright colors. Light colors and light lines may be lost when printing your book.

  • Can I use pencil to write my story?

If you choose to use pencil the lines must be dark or traced over in pen. Light lines may be lost when printing your book. Please note that handwriting must be legible.

  • Does Lulu Jr. correct spelling errors in typeset books?

No, we print what you submit. We will make no edits to the content provided.

  • Is there a minimum or maximum word count?

    Typesetting
If you choose to have us typeset your book, there is a limit of 20 words per page.

    Your child’s handwriting
If you want us to print your book in your child’s handwriting, we recommend not writing past the lines on the page. This will ensure your child’s text is maintained in its entirety throughout the printing process.

  • I lost some of my book materials. What should I do?

Please email us at customerservice@lulujr.com and let us know which blank page(s) you need. We will send you a PDF file of the blank page that you can print from home.

You can download the instruction sheets here:
    Instruction sheet for IlluStory
    Instruction sheet for IlluStory Jr.
Instruction sheet for My Awesome Book
Instruction sheet for My Comic Book

  • My pages are soiled. Will this print in my book?

Yes, if you color outside of the designated areas in the template or spill something on the pages, they will be reproduced in the printed book. We recommend you recreate the page rather than use the soiled page. We provide extra materials in your kit for this reason.

  • I am submitting a photo for the “About the Author” section. Will I get it back?

We cannot return photos, so be sure you are not sending in the only copy you have. We also recommend scanning your child’s artwork at home before mailing your envelope as a safety precaution.

I Am Finished. What Do I Do Next?

  • I cannot find my envelope. Where do I send the materials?

At this time we do not print or ship outside of the United States.

  • Can you ship to military base addresses?

Yes, we are able to ship to military addresses!

If you complete your book online, you should receive it in two weeks from the time we receive it. If you mail in your materials, you should receive your book about three weeks after we receive the materials. Typesetting books may add a few days to the process.
Important: Printing and delivery times may take longer during peak ordering times such as the end of the school year and holidays.

  • How do I find my order status?

Email us at customerservice@lulujr.com. For a faster response, please include your order number in the email.

  • Can I make changes to an order I have already submitted?

It depends on where your order is in the production process. Email customerservice@lulujr.com to see if your order can be changed. Please note there may be an additional fee to change orders that have been submitted for printing.

  • I have an issue with the order I received. What should I do?

Email us at customerservice@lulujr.com. Include a detailed description of the problem along with your order number. If possible, take a picture of the defect and attach it to the email.

  • How do I reorder my book?

To order additional copies of your book, go to lulujr.com, click on the Order Copies tab. Enter the book ID located on your book’s back cover to begin the reorder process. Your book will be printed and shipped in 6-8 business days.

  • If I want to order more copies later, how long do you retain my book?

Your book file will be retained for 12 months from the date it is received.

  • Who owns the copyright to my book after it is completed?

You do. We occasionally use author's books as examples of what the book making kits produce, but you always retain the rights to your book.
